So, how do you choose the right one and how do you choose whether you want to work with a freelancer or a large agency? If you’ve ever hired an agency in the past you’ll find that usually you’ll deal day to day with an account manager who then passes on your requirements and changes to a designer or developer who implements them then advises your account manager when they’re done.

Freelancers these days have to be experts in a number of disciplines. It’s no use being a great designer who can’t clearly communicate with their clients. Freelancers generally have excellent procedures in place for handling both the client liason aspect of the project as well the actual implementation.

This gives you the confidence that when you’re passing on your requirements for your project that you’re actually passing them directly to the person who will be doing the work!

10. Your project is more important to a freelancer

This may sound like a bold statement but freelancers tend to work from project to project so yours will more often than not be the most important thing they’re working on.

Agencies tend to operate with more clients and prioritise work differently, often based on the size of the client. If your project is competing for attention with a £250k website launch there’s a real danger your project may move down the todo list in favour of the big multinational company account who have demanded a launch day for a new promotion at short notice.

Dealing directly with the freelancer who is working on your project often shortens the time to completion of your project.

There’s no chain involved in getting your requirements implemented and changes can be done straight away rather than falling into the inbox of a designer in an agency who may have 20 other jobs their boss has asked them to complete by the end of the day.

At this point as a client you may be half convinced about trying the freelance route when it comes to your next project but are perhaps thinking that if you hire an agency, you’re not only hiring someone who specialised purely in web design but a complete solution which gives you access not only to a designer but perhaps also a developer and a copy writer and someone who specialises in search engine optimisation.

This is of course true, by hiring an agency, you’ll get enough resource to complete your project and the cost of the project will reflect this.

However, don’t for a second think that freelancers don’t have great networks of contacts too. We stick together and work together on projects based purely on requirements rather than keeping all these staff on salary.

13. We do the work anyway

This may come as a surprise to some clients but I can certainly speak from experience here. That project you’ve just paid an agency £900 a day to complete – well, I did it for you anyway but for much less money.

Agencies often call in freelance/contract talent to work on projects that they don’t want to turn down but don’t have the in-house resource to complete at the time. I’ve worked on a number of projects as a contractor with a wide range of agencies who have effectively collected a pay-cheque at the end of the project and paid me my “share”. Why not consider removing this excess cost from day 1.

As I’ve mentioned earlier in this list, your project will have specific requirements. When you’re looking to award the project you may find an agency who specialise in what you need. You might find one who does many of the things you need and can provide the remaining resource (usually a freelancer!) to do the job.

When you look around for a freelancer, you’re going to be able to find someone with an exact skill set to complete your project on time and budget.

Search engine optimisation: one of the most (if not the most) controversial digital marketing topics. Some say that content marketing is the new SEO. Others say that it’s possible to link your way to the top of Google. Matthew Woodward, on the other hand, will tell you that it’s possible to rank a blog (and yes, even make it to the top 100 in Technorati) with zero intentional backlinking efforts.

There seems to be no clear answer to what works and what doesn’t … because, well … there is no clear answer to what works and what doesn’t. Different people with different skill sets can make different things work for their website’s SEO.

SEO doesn’t have to be difficult though — you just need to think it through, discover what works best for your site, and (above all) track your progress to see what is/isn’t working.

Most Common SEO Mistakes with Solutions!

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a topic that most WordPress developers at least have a minimal grasp on. The general premise is simple enough: if your website is fast, highly linked, and optimized with the right keywords, you stand a good chance at ranking well on Google (and other search engines, if you care about them).

However, a basic understanding doesn’t always guarantee that you’ll develop WordPress based websites or tools that are SEO friendly. It’s possible that you are making one or more mistakes related to Search Engine Optimization without even realizing it.

Here are four of the top SEO mistakes that WordPress developers should avoid, and ways that you can stay on Google’s good side.

1.Installing WordPress on a Subdomain

If you work within an agency or in a client facing role of any kind, you certainly know better than to argue with your customers. However, this is one instance in which you should be very firm: clients should not add their company blog to blog.domain.com.

With regards to SEO, a subdomain is viewed as a separate domain with its own authority and ‘rating’. If a client is creating a new website and a new blog, and their blog is hosted on a subdomain, this means that incoming links to the blog (where they will probably be creating a majority of their link worthy content) will not pass any authority to their site domain.

On the other hand, if the blog is installed in a subdirectory, as is most common, incoming links will pass authority to the site domain. This can help build a website’s reputation and increase the amount of inbound links twice as fast, especially if the client’s content is mostly housed here.

This topic is one that is regularly discussed by SEOs, especially because there are times in which a subdomain installation might be a better choice. This Search Engine Watch article has more information on the theoretical situations that may lead you to choose a subdomain over a subdirectory, including a reputation management issue or desire to occupy an additional spot in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

2.Aggressive Credit Links from Themes or Plugins

This mistake is one that applies to any developers creating WordPress themes, or occasionally plugins.

Many themes have a credit link in the footer with a link to the creator’s website, which is common practice. However, aggressive credit linking can be a huge SEO mistake.

When you add a credit link to the footer of your theme, or somewhere below or within a plugin, this link essentially appears on every page of a WordPress installation on which it is used. This is known as a sitewide link. Sitewide links can be very powerful, and generally speaking, the more you get, the better your site authority will be.

However, Google’s algorithm has advanced to the point of easily detecting unnatural links, specifically sitewide ones. So if your theme or plugin ends up on thousands of websites, and hundreds of thousands of indexed pages, you could be in trouble. A sitewide link from a few sites may look natural, but from thousands of unrelated websites with different topics? It’s not going to make much sense.

Increasing your own website’s reputation through the use of aggressive credit links simply isn’t worth the gamble. To preserve your credit link without potentially subjecting yourself to a Google penalty, I recommend changing any footer or plugin credit links to nofollow.

Simply add the rel=”nofollow” link to your link as follows:

1<ahref=”http://www.wordpress.org” rel=”nofollow”>Theme by WordPress.org</a>

The credit link will still appear intact, allowing those interested in your work to visit your site, but no value will be passed. Essentially, the site using your theme or plugin won’t be seen as ‘endorsing you’, which won’t boost (or harm) your authority.

3.Not Taking Site Speed into Consideration

There are two ways that the speed of a WordPress installation affects a website’s SEO:

  1. Google prefers faster websites and will give them preference over slower ones in its ranking algorithm

  2. Users prefer faster websites. If users are driving up the bounce rate by leaving quickly because WordPress takes too long to load, Google will dock the site in its ranking algorithm

A study by Moz found that it’s not how long it takes your entire website or page to load that affects SEO and therefore ranking, but the time to first byte. Therefore, if your server is sluggish, or a plugin or dependency is wrecking the time it takes to load WordPress, your ranking (or your client’s) could take a hit.

However, keep in mind that this isn’t all just about what search engines want. Users want faster websites, too. Generally speaking, faster websites have lower bounce rates, and have higher conversion rates as well.

4.Ignoring SEO Altogether

Ignoring SEO altogether is, in my opinion, the worst mistake a WordPress developer can make. Ignorance is not bliss, and if you’re doing any kind of work for a client in which you are responsible for ‘making it work’, you owe it to them to have an understanding of how SEO can be used to improve their current circumstances or your own development tasks.

However, even if you work as part of a team, or will be handing your work off to a team in which someone responsible for SEO is employed, it’s still key to have some knowledge of how SEO works and why it is important. If you develop slow, weighty plugins or link heavy themes, or install WordPress without a CDN, you may simply be creating additional work for someone else further down the line.

5.Too Much Indexing

Your newest and hottest content needs to be indexed by every search engine out there. Your dummy page, on the other hand, doesn’t. If a search engine is indexing every single page on your site, whether it needs it or not, you’re generating more noise and not enough relevant results.

6.Relevant Tags

If you’ve got a massive block of text at the bottom of each post, search engines can’t make heads or tails of it, making this one of the most egregious SEO mistakes. Keep your tags specific and relevant.

7.Too Few Internal Links

Internal links are good for a lot more than just driving traffic to other posts on your blog; they also help search engines better categorize your site. Think of it this way; with just the one page, they have to draw all their conclusions from that page. Internal linking means search engines will compare several pages to find the common theme.

8.Irrelevant External Links

Just like your internal links need to be clear and relevant, your external links should be putting your site into a context. Again, search engines will compare your site and the sites you link to against each other to look for common themes. So look carefully at your external links before posting, to ensure they define you the way that you want.

9.Leaving Alt Tags and Titles Blank for Images

Search engines are great at text; images, not so much. Alt text and titles for images often tell search engines what they’re about, making it easier for your content to be found online. There’s a lot of argument about which is more important, but it doesn’t matter: Cover your bases with both.

10.Keyword Overdose

Keyword overdose is an enormous SEO mistake in two ways. The first is that if you use a phrase too often, it will lead to over optimization and most search engines will start to punish you for that. The second is that there is no better way to drive away readers and reduce links to your site. The best way is to keep them at an optimal level and avoid over optimization.

11.Relevant Headers

Just like people look at headlines to get the gist of the story and keep reading, so do search engines. Make sure your H1, H2, and H3 headers are all relevant to your post, preferably in different ways.

12.Missing the Forest for the Trees

This is, by far, the biggest SEO mistake. Most blogs are tightly focused on one topic, and everything in your SEO strategy, including everything above, should be focused on that topic. If you don’t have that big picture focus, none of your hard detail work will matter.

13.Not Defining Canonical URLs

If you have never heard about canonicalization before then brace yourself - it can be a slightly confusing concept. In order to define it effectively I will turn to Matt Cutts, Google’s Head of Search:

Canonicalization is the process of picking the best URL when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages. For example, most people would consider these the same urls:

  • www.example.com

  • example.com/

  • www.example.com/index.html

  • example.com/home.asp

But technically all of these URLs are different. A web server could return completely different content for all them. When Google “canonicalizes” a URL, we try to pick the one that seems like the best representative from that set.

Put simply, if you don’t tell Google and friends which version of a page to index and rank, they’re going to try to figure it out themselves. The last thing you want is search engines having to pick from multiple instances what is essentially the exact same page. The solution is to provide them with a canonical URL.

This is essentially a three step process:

  • Tell WordPress how to present your site (i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/ or http://yoursite.com/).

  • Tell Google (using Webmaster Tools) which URL type you want them to use.

  • Use a plugin (such as the aforementioned WordPress SEO by Yoast) to ensure that canonical URLs are defined on each page of your site.

14.Not Optimizing Your Site for Google+ Authorship

Like it or not, Google+ is here to stay. You may be surprised to know that it is the second biggest social network behind Facebook, beating the likes of YouTube and Twitter.

But I’m not here to talk about social media strategization. Instead I want to focus on the concept of Google+ authorship and how it can be utilized to strengthen your position in the SERPs and boost click through rates.

If you’ve not heard of Google+ authorship before, you’ve almost certainly seen it. Every search result in Google that incorporates a profile photo of the author is an example. Astonishingly, that little photo has been proven to boost clickthrough rates in the SERPs by 150%. Further, an experiment by Cyrus Shepard from Moz resulted in an additional 56% increase in clickthroughs. In short, by incorporating Google+ authorship on your site, you can attract more search engine traffic with the same rankings.

Getting Google to verify your authorship is not an entirely straightforward process but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes and will subsequently offer you ongoing benefits. In short, it’s well worth doing. My favorite tutorial is by WPBeginner

15.Not Optimizing How Your Posts Look in the SERPs

This mistake is similar to the previous one regarding Google+ authorship, as it relates to your clickthrough rate in the SERPs.

It is borne out of an ignorance of the importance of what searchers see on Google as opposed to simply where they see it. Although the placement of a website on the SERPs (ie, 1 - 10) is a key factor, people can often be drawn to lower rankings if the titles and/or descriptions are compelling. That is why you should optimize each of your posts to give yourself the best possible chance of attracting a good clickthrough rate.

There are two things that you should concern yourself with:

  • The Meta Title: this is what will display on the SERPs in place of any headline you choose for the post onsite.

  • The Meta Description: Google may choose to use this in place of an excerpt from your post (which can often be nothing more than a confusing mass of words).

By default there is no way to define these in WordPress - you need a plugin to get the job done. You can either choose a standalone plugin (for which my recommendation would be Add Meta Tags) or a plugin that incorporates multiple SEO features (such as the aforementioned WordPress SEO by Yoast).
